MM·ARTech+ Residency Program Officially Launches in Shanghai

August 22, 2026 – Shanghai, China – The MM·ARTech+ Digital Arts Residency Program officially launched at “Motion Magic Space” in Shanghai, marking the start of a new international platform for digital art creation, exchange and experimentation.

Initiated by Motion Magic, a digital innovation company under Shanghai Media Group (SMG), the program brings together artists from around the world to explore the intersection of art, technology and urban culture. The first edition focuses on projection mapping, with eight artist teams taking part in a two-month residency to develop new works in Shanghai.

A Residency Shaped by Shanghai

MM·ARTech+ approaches Shanghai as both a place to create and a source of inspiration. Rather than simply using the city as a backdrop, artists are encouraged to explore its urban life, cultural memory and public spaces, and to consider how these elements can inform their work through digital technology.

Under the theme of “In Shanghai,”the artists will spend two months engaging with the city through research, exchange and experimentation. Projection mapping is the central artistic medium of the first edition, allowing them to work directly with architecture and public space through moving image, light and sound.

The residency values both the creative process and the final works. Artists from different cultural backgrounds and disciplines come together to exchange ideas, experiment with technology and learn from one another. These interactions become part of the creative process, shaping how their work develops in response to the city and the site.

Seven Half-Circles, One Collective Presentation

Works developed during the residency will be presented across Tanks 1–4 at Tank Shanghai. The presentation is organized around seven half-circle projection surfaces, each serving as an individual creative canvas while together forming a shared spatial experience.

The structure allows each artist to maintain their own creative approach while connecting the works through the architecture. Projection, light and sound interact with the curved surfaces of the tanks, turning the architecture itself into part of the artistic experience.

The presentation brings the residency into the public realm, sharing with audiences the ideas and experiments developed through the creative process.

About MM·ARTech

MM·ARTech+ aims to develop an ongoing international residency program for new media and digital art, creating opportunities for artists from different cultural and disciplinary backgrounds to meet, create and collaborate in Shanghai.

Building Connections Beyond the Residency

Future editions will continue to bring artists, technology and the city together, supporting new creative work and building lasting connections between artists and creative communities around the world.

The final works created through the MM·ARTech+ Residency Program will be publicly showcased as part of the 2026 Xuhui Light Festival from September 19 to October 7, 2026, at Tank Shanghai.
